Health Tips

ANTIOXIDANTS - Eat your beans! Nutrient compounds called 'flavonoids' have been found to be effective antioxidants that help protect against heart disease and cancer. These flavonoids are found in the coating of such beans as navy, pintos, kidney, great northern and black beans.

COUGHING Looking for a natural remedy to cure the seemingly incurable cough? Sage and Thyme have been used historically to calm coughing, so make a cup of hot Sage and Thyme tea.

DANDRUFF - Sage tea may help to eliminate dandruff.

FIBER Fiber accomplishes many beneficial tasks not the least of which includes supporting the digestive system. As research and studies continue it is clear that you can only benefit your health by consuming a high fiber diet. Fiber has been shown in studies to help reduce the rates of some forms of cancer, namely colon and breast cancer. Certain kinds of fiber have been found to lower levels of cholesterol in the blood. These are only a few of the major benefits of a high fiber diet.

REDUCE YOUR RISK FOR HEART DISEASE Eat pecans!! Although they are high in fat, they are not necessarily unhealthy for you. Pecans may help reduce low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or "bad" cholesterol, which is associated with heart disease.

TREAT YOUR FEET -  While running may be a positive form of exercise, make sure not to neglect the health of your feet. Wear thick and absorbent socks -- avoid cotton as it retains moisture -- avoid hard surfaces such as asphalt and make sure to buy premium sneakers with good shock absorption capacity.

LOSE WEIGHT WITH WATER

Nothing quells the appetite like water, lots and lots of water. Start out with two quart bottles in the morning and carry one with you to work or wherever you go. If you like, divvy up the 64 ounces of water into eight (8-ounce) bottles or four pint (16-ounce) bottles to carry around with you all day. Freeze half of them the night before and they will last all day, even in a hot car. Keep some unfrozen so they will be ready to drink immediately.

Yes. You will have to make more frequent bathroom trips, but it is worth it. Drink your 64 ounces of water before dinner, if possible, so you're not up half the night going to the bathroom.

Water not only fills you up and lessens your appetite, it prevents those "hungry horrors" we all encounter when our blood sugar drops and we reach for cookies, candy, ice cream, fries or other high-calorie treats. Water also flushes out the system, rids the body of bloat and toxins and rosies up the complexion. Now, start splashing.

WEIGHT TRAINING - Upper body strength is usually harder to achieve than lower body strength because we humans tend to use our legs and lower extremities more in everyday living. Have patience when trying to increase upper body strength. Don't try to rush the results by using weights that are too heavy. This can cause injury and hinder your training objectives.
