Oxygen Transport: Basic principles

Mammalian life and the bioenergetic process that maintains cellular integrity depend on a continuous supply of oxygen to sustain aerobic metabolism. Reduced oxygen delivery and the failure of the cellular use of oxygen occurs in times of prolonged stress and illness and if not corrected will result in organ dysfunction and death.

Physiology of oxygen transport

Although oxygen is the substrate that cells use in the greatest quantity, and on which aerobic metabolism and cell integrity depend, the tissues have no storage system for oxygen. They rely on a continuous supply of oxygen at a rate that precisely matches the body’s changing metabolic requirements. If this supply fails, even for a few minutes, tissue hypoxemia may develop resulting in anaerobic metabolism, production of lactate, cellular dysfunction and even cellular death.

Oxygen travels from environmental air to the mitochondria of individual cells in a series of steps. The lungs extract oxygen from the atmosphere and generate a flow of oxygenated blood to the tissues to maintain aerobic metabolism. The system must be energy efficient, must match oxygen distribution with metabolic demand, and allow efficient oxygen transport across the extra-vascular tissue matrix. At the tissue level, cells must be able to extract oxygen from the extra-cellular environment and use this oxygen efficiently in their cellular metabolic processes.

Oxygen uptake in the lungs

Arterial oxygen tension (PaO₂) is determined by inspired oxygen concentration, (how much oxygen is in the air that we breathe,) by barometric pressure, alveolar ventilation, and how efficiently oxygen is diffused from the alveoli to pulmonary capillaries. A healthy individual may have a PaO₂ reading in the 94% to 98% range. Anything below 90% can indicate some form of hypoxemia. The capillary blood is usually fully oxygenated before it has traveled one third of the distance of the alveolar-capillary interface in the lungs.

Oxygen concentration and barometric pressure

The percentage of oxygen in atmospheric air is constant at about 21% and does not change with altitude. Atmospheric pressure is the sum of the partial pressures of the constituent gases, oxygen and nitrogen, and changes with the weather and altitude.

Oxygen carrying capacity of the blood

Most oxygen (98%) is carried in the blood attached to hemoglobin (an iron molecule) with only a small amount (typically less than 2%) dissolved in the blood plasma. Despite this, the optimum hemoglobin concentration in critically ill patients is considerably lower sometimes reaching 70% or less. The lower the oxygen content of the blood, the more it impacts overall health.

Oxygen delivery from lungs to tissue

The major function of the circulatory system is to transport oxygen from the lungs to the tissues at a rate that satisfies overall oxygen consumption. The failure to supply sufficient oxygen to meet the metabolic requirements of the tissues results in circulatory shock. Under normal conditions the total or "global" oxygen delivery (DO2) is more than adequate to meet the total tissue oxygen requirements (VO2) for aerobic metabolism. Under prolonged stress and illness, this ratio is significantly altered.

Applications for Activated Stabilized Oxygen

Skin Care Formulations: Oxygen, as an additional ingredient in skin care formulations, provides biochemical properties, which clearly transcends traditional hyperbaric oxygen usage. Acidic Body Chemistry: An acidic condition, caused by the accumulation of acidic byproducts, occurs in poorly oxygenated cells. When excessive numbers of hydrogen ions are in the tissue environment they will combine with (and thus utilize) oxygen, resulting in an oxygen deficiency state. When cells are deprived of oxygen, lactic acid accumulates and the cellular environment becomes acidic. This reduces available oxygen for the primary function of metabolism because more oxygen is needed to neutralize the acid. The regular and daily use of stabilized oxygen may provide the cells with an abundant supply of oxygen to help neutralize the lactic acid and support healthy cell metabolism.

Water Treatment: For campers, hikers or those who store water for emergencies, approximately 15-20 drops of stabilized oxygen per gallon of water have been reported to inhibit the growth of disease bacteria. This works great for your pet’s water bowls, too.
