The CuZn FilterFoam is considered the standard cartridge that is used for those with Chlorine in your water and is almost always a part of your water purification solution, unless you are on well water. The FilterFoam media is used for point-of-use countertop and under-counter models, shower filters, bath filters, travel filters and whole house systems. But rarely is Chlorine the only water problem to be resolved.

What's In Your Water?

Before purchasing a water filter, you should know what is in your water because different water pollution problems require different media solutions. If you are only interested in removing city water disinfection chemicals, the standard options are chlorine, chloramine and fluoride.

If the disinfection chemicals used by your water treatment company are not listed on your water bill, simply call your water department and ask them. The question to ask is. "How many parts per million (ppm) of chlorine, chloramines and fluoride, if any, do you add to the water?"

Not every water treatment facility uses all three. Some only use chlorine, some use a combination of chlorine and chloramines, some use only chloramines, some use chlorine and fluoride, some use chloramines and fluoride and some use all three.

Once you know what you want to remove, the choice becomes easy. You can get a:

• Double cartridge for Chlorine and Fluoride
• Triple cartridge for Chlorine, Chloramines and Fluoride

Other Water Contaminants and Problems

Chlorine, chloramine and fluoride are the most popular options for countertop and under-counter point of use water filtration. But there are many other water pollutants that you may want to also remove, as described below. Specialty single and multiple cartridge countertop, under-counter and whole house systems are available, using filtration medias appropriate to the problem. Most of the systems listed below include CuZn's FilterFoam media plus other medias to treat specific problems. CuZn has perfected a multi-media layering technique that maximizes media performance, enabling them to combine several medias in a single cartridge, without compromising water flow and maximizing performance.

Cysts (Bacteria) and Pharmaceutical Drugs

Common water-borne microbiological cysts (bacteria) are Cryptosporidium or Giardia cysts. If your municipal water department is using chlorine and/or chloramines to treat your water, cysts should not be a problem unless there is a contamination in the water lines somewhere between your house and the water processing plant. If you are on well water, cysts are potentially a problem. A water test can detect bacteria in your water.

A recent analysis of tap water supplies in major metropolitan areas discovered that the water was contaminated with trace amounts of pharmaceuticals including antibiotics, anti-seizure medications, anti-inflammatory drugs, psychotropic drugs, pain medications and even caffeine. If you suspect that your water may be contaminate with cysts or pharmaceutical drugs, upgrade to the 1-micron absolute activated acid wash coconut shell carbon filter.

Arsenic (often found in Well Water or Spring Water)

Arsenic is a semi-metal element thatis odorless and tasteless. It enters drinking water supplies from natural deposits in the earth or from agricultural and industrial practices. Non-cancer effects can include thickening and discoloration of the skin, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting; diarrhea; numbness in hands and feet; partial paralysis; and blindness. Arsenic has been linked to cancer of the bladder, lungs, skin, kidney, nasal passages, liver and prostate. If your water has tested positive for arsenic, CuZn offers countertop, under-counter and whole house arsenic filters.

Nitrate Removal (often found in Well Water or Spring Water)

Drinking water high in nitrate is potentially harmful to human and animal health. Nitrate (NO3) is a naturally occurring form of nitrogen (N) which is very mobile in water. It is essential for plant growth and is often added to soil to improve productivity. Water moving down through soil after rainfall or irrigation carries dissolved nitrate with it to ground water. In this way, nitrate enters the water supplies of many homeowners who use wells or springs. If your source of water is a well or spring and tests have identified nitrate, CuZn offers countertop, under-counter and whole house nitrate filters. A water test can detect nitrates in your water.

Radioactives

In addition to nuclear disasters such as the recent one in Japan, radiation enters drinking water supplies from natural deposits in the earth or from agricultural and industrial practices. CuZn uses activated carbon, mixed bed cation and anion resin and inorganic based ion exchanger media that lasts roughly six months or up to 1,000 gallons. This combination of medias removes strontium, uranium, plutonium, cesium, iodine and other radioactive contaminants, and iodide to a lesser degree. Hardness in Water

Hard water is one of the most common water quality concerns reported by consumers in the United States. The hardness of water is determined by the calcium and, to a lesser extent, magnesium carbonates naturally dissolved in it. As the concentration of the dissolved minerals increase, the water becomes harder.

Hard water can be a nuisance in many ways. Most directly, you notice it on your skin and hair since you bathe in water frequently. Very hard water also leaves calcium scale or mineral deposit behind when it is heated up. Beyond that, you may notice an accumulation of white, chalky deposits on items such as plumbing, tubs, sinks, pots and pans. If you have hard water, CuZn offers a whole house salt free water softener. A water test can detect hardness in your water.

Acid Water (low pH)

Acid water is water with a potential hydrogen (pH) of less than 7. pH refers to the amount of hydrogen ions mixed in with the water. pH is measured on a scale from 0 to 14, and 7 represents neutral where the water is neither alkaline nor acidic. Zero through 7 indicates acidity, the lower the number the higher the acidity. Seven through 14 indicates alkalinity, the higher the number the higher the alkalinity.

The corrosive nature of acidic water causes metal ions such as iron, manganese, copper, lead and zinc to leach into the water, causing elevated levels of toxic metals in your water. Signs of acid water are corrosion of fixtures, blue staining (from copper pipes) or rust staining (from iron pipes). Acidic water can also cause pinhole leaks and pipe failure over time. Iron and Sulphur Removal (Orange Tint to Water)

To determine whether or not the CuZn filter will remove iron from your drinking water, here's a simple test you can do yourself: Fill a clear glass with water and let it sit for 15-20 minutes. If the iron settles to the bottom then the standard 5-micron CuZn Countertop Water Filter should be able to remove the majority of the iron particles. If the particles remain suspended, a filter won't help. CuZn offers a whole house iron and sulfur systems.
